Locks and alarms can sometimes be bypassed by professional
thieves and removed in seconds. Trackers, although fairly
expensive, are extremely effective deterrents and can
be hugely successful in leading to a fast recovery of
a stolen caravan. This is reflected in the caravan insurance
companies' willingness to offer discounts of up to 30%
per year.
Traditional tracking devices designed for the car industry
did cause problems as power supply was difficult when
a caravan was laid up. There are now tracking devices
on the market specifically designed for fitting to caravans
with low battery drain - meaning the use of a leisure
battery is sufficient.
One such caravan tracking device is the Phantom Target,
which combines Global Satellite Positioning and Mobile
Phone Technology to generate pinpoint co-ordinates of
a stolen caravan for the police to make a fast recovery.
The Phantom Target was co-developed by Caravan
Guard insurance company especially for touring caravans.
With low battery drain and effectiveness across Europe
and Southern Ireland, the device also allows the customer
to benefit from major insurance savings.
Another product on the market is the somewhat more
expensive RAC Trackstar. It uses the same technology
as the Phantom Target, automatically informing the control
station if your caravan or motorhome is stolen and giving
them the exact location of the vehicle. This information
is then relayed to the police to enable retrieval of
your caravan and hopefully lead to the arrest of the
thief.
As the system is controlled by a key fob it is able to offer additional benefits such as allowing you to send an emergency distress signal direct from your caravan in the case of breakdown, medical or other situations.
